New Build Care Home Achieves “Outstanding” Rating

Posted on 3 December 2018

Pacy & Wheatley Construction were tasked by our client, Horizon Healthcare, to complete the Research Brief design and construction of a new build care home, offering eight places for adults with a learning difficulty, who may also have a physical disability. The home was the very first care home in the Bradford and Calderdale area to achieve a rating of "Outstanding" from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Based on Long Hill Road in Huddersfield, the stone-faced building was designed to sit flush with other buildings in the surrounding area.

The new home is close to local amenities, such as a hydrotherapy pool, several restaurants and cafes, arts and craft workshops, and the local supermarket. Located in a busy residential area, the care home also has easy access to the town centre.

All eight rooms are located on the ground floor of the accommodation for ease of access, with level access entry from the car park to the front of the property. Each bedroom was fitted with an en-suite shower, sink and toilet, for ease of use and accessibility.

Communal areas of the home include a large, furnished lounge for relaxation, as well as an assisted sensory bathroom with Jacuzzi and music. The kitchen/dining room area includes height-adjustable tables, and a multi-sensory activity room is designed to encourage relaxation, and assist each individual's development across a range of specific needs.

There's also a dedicated team supporting each patient's needs day and night. On-site staff accommodation and ancillary spaces allow for individual needs to be supported, as well as a full-time Deputy Manager.

Several challenges had to be overcome during the works. Excavations and grouting were necessary to ensure the concrete slab foundation provided a sufficient platform to support the new building. We also installed sunken flower beds to the perimeter of the building in order to lower the ground near the base of the frame. Safety features, such as barriers and knee rails, were added around the site, to ensure safety for wheelchair users.

Close communication between all parties involved ensured the project ran smoothly, and works were completed ahead of schedule. The client was very pleased with the final quality of the product. Our team are delighted to have been directly involved with the first care home to achieve an "Outstanding" rating from the CQC.
