Crematorium Construction, Doncaster
- Client: Memoria Limited
- Sector: Crematoria
- Type: New Build
- Location: Doncaster
- Project Value: c £2.8m
Project Description
The New Build Crematorium and associated external works have been constructed on a green field site, bordered on one side by a public road and on the other three sides by privately owned arable fields. The initial project stage involved extensive statutory services diversions/relocations, Highway Section 278 reconfigurations, complex timings, and road closures/nightwork. After that, significant Earthworks were to recontour the site to provide the necessary levels for the building, gardens, car parking, drainage attenuation, and feature pond. It was necessary to retain all soil on site. One of the Project's features is the Garden of Remembrance, which offers memorialisation made exclusively from British stone and blends perfectly with the surrounding undulating countryside. The chapel seats 100 people, has the potential to stand and seat 200 by including the foyer space and can accommodate services of over 400 people on the site by piping the service outside under the porte-cochere. It may be used for cremation or memorial services. Parking for 100 vehicles is available, along with cycle, motorcycle & external toilet block facilities. Within the chapel, there is a hearing loop to assist those with hearing difficulties, together with the latest in digital media systems, which ensure that all public address, music, internet webcam, and displays systems are capable of flexing to current and future society's modern needs. Memoria Limited operate Memorial Park and Crematorium throughout the country.
The Challenges
During the works to form the new access road to the new Crematorium, we have had to implement several road closures on the busy main road, including night closures with traffic management services.
During the excavation works, we found different types of ground conditions throughout the Project and endured the need to change the type & design of foundations. As a result, we had to resequence work to ensure the overall programme end date was not jeopardised.
The Solution & Key Achievements
Working closely with the Planning department as well as Doncaster Council, we managed to implement the road closures with minimal disruption due to careful planning and constant communication with all parties affected.
This Project was the first of its kind for Pacy & Wheatley Ltd., and we were proud to work alongside a Specialist Cremation Company from The Netherlands. This Company were specified by our client, but the whole process of the installation went very smoothly.
We are pleased to confirm that we have achieved BREEAM: very good for this Project. This is down to the hard work that our design team have put in working alongside the client to collate all the information & install various environmental improvements, including the PVs required to achieve the rating.
All excavated soils were retained on site.
It is a great project to be involved in.
The scheme design ensures anyone visiting the site has a peaceful location with suitable facilities to reflect & mourn, including the large expanse of landscaped memorial garden area.
