Project Description

Pacy and Wheatley Construction Design and Build project set in the grounds of the Rhalt care home Welshpool, a new build nine bed care facility for brain injury residents consisting of two storey timber frame clad with brickwork and render to Commission for Social Care Commission standards (CSCI) incorporating full wet room en-suites, kitchen, dining areas on both floors together with lounge facilities. All areas installed with nurse call facilities, sprinkler system and electronic security access and egress. The external works comprised a sensory garden, car parking and landscaping.

The Challenge

Construct the facility adjacent to the entrance of the existing 75 bed care facility.

Minimise disruption to elderly residents and visitors.

Drainage would require a new pumping station for the diversion of the existing facilities drainage. All without interruption.

To complete the project on time and to budget Provide cutting edge design and finishes.

The Solution

The need for strict traffic management was evident due to the footprint position. Deliveries were timed to quieter periods of the day and liaison of the traffic management plan with all supply chain members was set in place and carried out.

Disruption was minimised by parking of supply chain and operatives vehicles off site at the public swimming pool allowing visitors to the existing home to be able to park.

Drainage works had to be planned carefully with drain runs passing across the main entrance. A tanker was based on site during the installation and connection of the new pumping station.

Project completed on time and to budget. Design meetings held weekly with supply chain and fortnightly with the client where suggestions would be made to increase the specification without additional cost. This was evident in the completed scheme and provided a flagship project for Swanton Care.

Testimonial

Some positive feedback following my visit to Pacy & Wheatley site. Of particular interest was the specific use of the point of work; risk assessments used by your site manager, Michael Collins. Such work often falls outside of a contractors / subcontractors specific risk assessment / method statement and it is useful to know that your company has a procedure for dealing with this situation.
