Pacy and Wheatley completed an Educational Construction project involved the complete Refurbishment and modernisation of the Grade II listed Officers Mess at the former Duke of Wellington Barracks, Halifax.
The works principally included major modifications to the internal layout, minor structural work, refurbishment and decoration throughout, replacement of services infrastructure including passenger lift, sprinkler installation and external works. All works carried out to the highest standards and of a vernacular and historic style.
The building was being converted to form a secure pupil referral unit, for children with learning difficulties and particularly those with disruptive behaviour disorders.
Working within the grounds of a fully occupied and busy High School.
Sensitive renewal of mechanical and electrical services throughout the historic building and envelope
Preservation of existing internal features, such as decorative coving, internal feature joinery.
Once completed, working in close proximity to the new pupils, in carrying out additional works.
Careful selection of sub contractors to ensure the highest standards were achieved.
Excellent site management and coordination of trades.
Close liaison with the client’s design team ensured that hidden problems were swiftly provided with solutions.
Project completed within 20 week tight program.

97% waste removed from site was recovered for recycling.

‘Rance Booth & Smith Architects were delighted to work with Pacy & Wheatley Construction on the refurbishment of St Clare’s at Wellesley Park in Halifax. The Grade II Listed building was formerly an Officers Mess for the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and the work involved sensitive repairs and conversion to form an educational facility and offices. The work was successfully completed on time and to budget.
