Project Description

Pacy & Wheatley were delighted to have been appointed Principal Contractor by Barchester Healthcare to complete delivery of their newest 53-bed care home, located in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

The home delivers first-class residential and dementia care in a homely, secure environment. It features a wide range of facilities, including a café with outdoor seating, dining rooms with garden access, a cinema, and a relaxing spa bathroom located on each floor. The care home's internal layout has been designed to provide a fully inclusive space for its users. Communal areas within the building, including lounge seating areas on all levels, are located to benefit views out to the open space, with dining areas placed in a functional manner within the layout. The scheme included private dining, a hair and beauty salon, a cinema, activity rooms, and each bedroom having its own ensuite.

The works involved extensive external works, including forming a main site entrance and a car park area, along with off-site infrastructure upgrades and connections. Hard and soft Landscaping for residents to enjoy surrounds the building.

The Pacy & Wheatley Team are incredibly proud to have helped deliver this first-class care home for our repeat client, Barchester.

The Challenge

Brick slip panel detailing. The feature façade detail agreed before P&W involvement was to install some slim, stack-bonded vertical bricks, detailed as irregular sizes. After engaging with various masonry subcontractors, our initial view that this was not feasible was duly confirmed by others.

Off-site sewer and incoming service connections. Crossing a busy carriageway on a main bus route into the town centre.

The Solution & key Achievements

P&W liaised closely with a brick slip supplier and, in collaboration with the architect and structural engineer, developed a bespoke brick panel detail that involved cutting and bonding brick 'slips' to a cementitious board. All are bonded with a fire-resistant adhesive, and the panel is then mechanically fixed to an insulated timber frame and fire break.

Through close collaboration and early engagement with the utility company, council and highways departments, initial investigations were completed to plan the works accordingly, allowing a programme to be developed to work around the busy holiday period. The connections were successfully made ahead of practical completion, meaning no disruption to our clients' planned completion dates.
