Project Description
Pacy and Wheatley completed a Healthcare Refurbishment, Construction and remodelling project in Doncaster; the project was a fast track scheme with five phases over a 25 week period, to include the formation of a new six bed resuscitation facility, major injuries, minor injuries, GP call centre, and remodelled reception and waiting areas. Liquid plastic roof coverings were also renewed over the department. This scheme was the first NHS “Unplanned Care” facility within the UK.
The Challenge
Fast track five phase project, the completion date of each phase critical to ensure continuity of emergency service working within the existing operational A&E Department, maintaining ‘blue light’ access routes.
Ensuring protection and segregation of the public including management of daily changing pedestrian routes and management of deliveries, sharing the ‘blue light’ access and routes.
Major unplanned structural support works were necessary and had to be absorbed within the existing tight program.
The Solution
Programme and in depth planning were critical to ensure that Accident and Emergency facilities were fully operational 24 hours; 7 days per week.
Close and daily liaison with A&E staff and management.
Detailed phasing and screening plans produced and updated weekly.
Detailed ‘safe operating procedures’ were put in place when working within public areas.
Close liaison with design team.
Strong site management team with a dedicated person to liaise with the public.

Near zero defects at handover.
97% waste removed from site was recovered for recycling.
High standard of finish.
Encouraging and inviting a local primary school to hold an art competition, displaying all the paintings within the waiting areas to brighten the site screening.
