Project Description

Pacy and Wheatley, premier retail construction company based in Doncaster, Yorkshire, were delighted to have successfully completed the Steam & Moorlands Garden Centre, in Pickering, North Yorkshire. To construct an infill building linking the 2 existing building of machinery centre and garden centre / café, which formed the current garden centre complex. The construction was steelframe structure, with traditional masonary façade, cladding and feature curtain walling the North and South elevations. The ground floor links the Machinery sales area and Garden centre, with the 1st floor becoming a fantastic restaurant setting.

The Challenges

To produce a first class product for a valued client and to complete the project on time and to budget.

Working in and around the live garden centre, which continued trading for business throughout the build.

Limited access to the south elevation of the build.

To achieve an air permeability pass of 7.5 as the building is linked to 2 older steel-framed units, which had not been built under current regulations or to air permeability standards.

To open the ground floor sales area for business prior to completion of the 1st floor to hit early spring sales.

The Solutions

Utilising competent in house staff and key supply chain members for the project.

Close and daily liaison with the client and staff.

Projected delivery assisted by the use of Local Labour, Suppliers and Subcontractors.

Sub Contract Collaboration meetings were vital at finishing stage.

Key Achievements

Achieving air permeability of 7.4.

Establishing early relationships with the client and garden centre staff.

Achieving ‘doors open for business’ to the ground floor sales areas in time for early spring sales.

Completion of a fantastic, but huge cantilevered balcony to the length of the south elevation, extending the restaurant to the outside, with elevated views over the garden centre.
